Blinding an opponent during battle is quite difficult to do accurately without first destroying the entire hand.  But rangers can teach the precise knowledge of hand-to-hand combat to blind an opponent by a swift, carefully placed blow to the back of the head.  This creates a temporary loss of vision to the victim, which can also be removed by a 'cure blindness' spell.
