Halfings
are the slightly taller, more muscular descendants of the ancient race
of Hobbits, who once lived in the Shire, a small village made of homes
burrowed into the ground. They lived protected from evil by the Rangers
and Elves, but the Shire has long since been destroyed by the Evil One.
Without homes, the Hobbits had to migrate their peoples to friendlier habitats, spreading their numbers thinly through the Human cities of Mit'uen. The great war, long journey and adjusting to life with the humans (and consequently, breeding with humans) changed the Hobbit's appearance so much, they stopped calling themselves Hobbits and adopted the Human term for themselves, Halflings. Indeed, they had taken many human characteristics, such as much more height and health, quicker reflexes and a much less domestic lifestyle.
Even though Halflings have somewhat rotund bodies, they are by no means clumsy or cumbersome. They are quick of mind and body, and are surprisingly self-reliant. Halflings are highly intelligent beings, and can dream wonderful thoughts, but sometimes lack the motivation to achieve them. This attitude and the breeding with the more vivacious Humans, creates a strange lifestyle for the Halfling. A warm fire and smoking pipe is always a favorite for the Halfling, but when the Human's lust for glory blends with the Halfling's tendency to go on tangents, the little folk can become victims of spontaneity, and typically find themselves in some strange circumstances.
The Halfling's small body gives it great maneuverability, and their strangest quirk is one of their greatest advantages: They have large feet with thick leathery bottoms, resistant to the harsh elements, able to walk long distances without the use of shoes. Their characteristic feet are covered with thick furry hair, the same color as their body hair. These unprotected feet can move silently, giving Halflings the innate ability of sneak.
